Container Terminal Optimization

Seaport container terminals are a vital part of the logistics systems in international trade. After a period of long-term growth, the container shipping industry is lately facing multiple pressures and constraints, demanding further optimization.

Rising competition among ports and the technical progress in ship design, resulting in higher capacity vessels, has put enormous pressure on terminal operators to develop more efficient container handling systems.

To face the logistic requirements stemming from the ever-increasing volume of containers being transported around the world, different operational problems at terminals had been identified, such as berth allocation, quay crane scheduling, and yard operations.

As some of the early innovators are beginning to plateau, it’s clear that the next stage will be to focus on optimization.

Mathematical approaches and simulations are supporting the development of more reliable solutions for current challenges to facilitate better decision making about container terminal optimization.

Container terminal optimization follows a process of eliminating all the insufficient decisions to present terminal operators with the best solution to ensure a maximum level of efficiency is produced for every decision made.

More and more optimization is requested for container terminals and is intended to be used within all parts and areas of the terminal to increase the overall performance, efficiency, and profitability. This includes terminal design and layout, operational setup, types of equipment as well as processes, systems, and different kind of techniques.

The TOS is increasingly becoming more involved in terminal optimization by offering optimization features, which supports better use of equipment and workforces
